2024 Breeders' Cup Turf
Updated October 29, 2024
Purse: $5,000,000
Distance: 1½ miles
Grade: 1
Age: 3-year-old+
Post Time: Saturday, November 2 at 2:01 p.m. PDT (Race 7 at Del Mar)
This $5 million race at 1 ½ miles on the turf course is often kind to European runners: in the last ten years, only two horses based in North America have won the race: Main Sequence (2014) and Bricks and Mortar (2019). So, when handicapping this race, take the time to get to know the international shippers!
While America always sends the very best of its turf division up against the second flight of Europeans, they still find it difficult to beat them. Aidan O’Brien has been particularly successful; he has won this race seven times, more than any other trainer. Keep an eye on Charlie Appleby, too; he has been excellent with his shippers, particularly in recent years, and won in 2021 with Yibir and in 2022 with Rebel’s Romance. Then, in 2023, Aidan O’Brien won again with Auguste Rodin.

2024 Breeders’ Cup Turf Contenders
These horses are among the leading contenders for the Breeders’ Cup:
Far Bridge - Trainer: Christophe Clement - Sire: English Channel
Coming out of a pair of top-level wins at 1 ½ miles, he is the top American hope for the Breeders’ Cup Turf. Those two races were this four-year-old’s first tries at the trip, meaning he still has some upside to improve a little more at the distance. He is flexible enough to set the pace or rally from a handful of lengths off of it, always a positive in a bigger field like this. And, he can take his form to tracks all over the country.
Illinois - Trainer: Aidan O’Brien - Sire: Galileo
This consistent colt from the Aidan O’Brien yard has never missed the board in nine starts. Though he has yet to win at the top level, he has a pair of Group 2 wins and three placings in Group 1 company. He has some questions to answer: this three-year-old has never faced older, and most of his better efforts against Group-quality horses have come at true staying distances. But, he is young enough to improve, and he could well be a perfect example of a second-stringer at this distance in Europe who is good enough for this spot.
Jayarebe - Trainer: Brian Meehan - Sire: Zoffany
He shapes as an interesting up-and-coming European trying a few new challenges. He hasn’t run at the top level since a try as a juvenile, but all five of his starts this year have been strong, including a pair of group-level wins. He won the Prix Dollar (G2) at Longchamp by a head last out, his first start against older, and his pedigree suggests that the stretch from 1 3/16 or 1 ¼ miles to 1 ½ is worth trying. As a horse who likes to be forward, the biggest question is if he’ll handle it well to be a bit more off of American speed than usual.
Luxembourg - Trainer: Aidan O’Brien - Sire: Camelot
Part of the Aidan O’Brien brigade, he stretches back out to 1 ½ miles for the first time since a win at the distance three back at Epsom in the Coronation Cup (G1). That happened on soft ground, though he has run good races on better footing, too. Pace may be the question; he’ll have to prove that he has enough pace to get on or near the lead against some Americans who have shown a bit of pace. If he can, he has claims.
Rebel’s Romance - Trainer: Charlie Appleby - Sire: Dubawi
He won this race in 2022 at Keeneland. He looked adrift in his first three starts in 2023, but stretching back to December of last year, he has looked like a top grass talent once again, and been named the morning-line favorite. He has won five of his last six starts, with the only blemish on his record coming when he was third to Goliath in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (G1) at Ascot two back. With strong 1 ½-mile form and a deeply proven ability to ship around the world, he shapes as a contender to win again.
Shahryar - Trainer: Hideaki Fujiwara - Sire: Deep Impact
His record into the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Turf wasn’t a lot: he was fifth in the Sheema Classic (G1) and no threat in the Sapporo Kinen before turning in a shock third-place finish last year over the grass course at Santa Anita. This year? His record coming into the Breeders’ Cup Turf isn’t gaudy, but it’s a little better: a close fifth in the Arima Kinen (G1), a credible second to Rebel’s Romance in the Sheema Classic, and a fifth in the Sapporo Kinen. If last year suggests anything, this was probably the goal all along and he can be an interesting price for exotics.
