2024 Breeders’ Cup Distaff
Updated November 2, 2024
Purse: $2,000,000
Distance: 1 1/8 miles
Grade: 1
Age: 3-year-old+ fillies & mares
Post Time: Saturday, November 2 at 1:21 p.m. PDT (Race 6 at Del Mar)
The Breeders’ Cup Distaff is another of the original races of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, first run in 1984. Despite the rich Filly & Mare Turf and the Juvenile Fillies for younger horses, this is the premier female Thoroughbred racing event of the entire season, and the most prestigious female dirt race anywhere in the world. The race is often a ticket to champion older dirt mare honors, and superstars who have won this race in the past include Bayakoa, Beholder, Lady’s Secret, and the great Zenyatta.
Although it’s limited to female horses, basically a fillies’ and mares’ complement to the Breeders’ Cup Classic, this is a high-quality race, one that certain top trainers have excelled at preparing their charges for over the years. Bill Mott, Brad Cox, and John Shirreffs have done well in this race in the past, as well as the country’s most successful trainer, Steve Asmussen.

Breeders’ Cup Distaff Contenders
As you start handicapping this year’s Breeders’ Cup Distaff, these are the leading contenders for the race:
Candied - Trainer: Todd Pletcher - Sire: Candy Ride
She is a three-year-old, one of the best in the class not named Thorpedo Anna. Unlike Thorpedo Anna, though, she does have some experience against older already: she thrashed fellow Distaff entrant Honor D Lady in the Lady’s Secret, and then finished third behind Idiomatic in the Spinster (G1) last out. She’ll need to do better to threaten in the Distaff, but now she comes second off a freshening, and likes 1 ⅛ miles enough to figure for a share.
Musical Mischief - Trainer: Michael McCarthy - Sire: Into Mischief
Among the long shots, give this pressing-or-stalking type a look. Trainer Michael McCarthy has built a reputation on being shrewd when he places horses in ambitious spots. She won with confidence at 16-1 when McCarthy put her in the Locust Grove (G2) this year, and the fact that he is pressing on with her to the Breeders’ Cup merits respect.
Raging Sea - Trainer: Chad Brown - Sire: Curlin
This 1 ⅛-mile specialist carried a three-race win streak into the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, including a two-back score over no less than Idiomatic in the Personal Ensign (G1) at Saratoga. Her last race was a head victory over long shot Batucada in the Beldame (G2)—a less impressive effort, though she overcame a less-than-perfect start, and speed-wise, she has plenty of room to bounce back to her best for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff.
Sugar Fish - Trainer: Jeff Mullins - Sire: Accelerate
An up-and-coming three-year-old, she comes into the Breeders’ Cup Distaff off a defeat of older horses in the Zenyatta (G2) at Santa Anita. She still has to prove that she can fire her best shot at Del Mar, since she was defeated in the Clement L. Hirsch two starts back. However, that was her first start against older, so now she returns with a little more experience under her belt. That could get her into the money at a price.
Thorpedo Anna - Trainer: Kenny McPeek - Sire: Fast Anna
The only blemish on her record hardly qualifies as a blemish: she missed by a head to an on-song Fierceness in the Travers (G1), and Fierceness should go as one of the favorites in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. The victory in the 1 1/16-mile Cotillion (G1) was a close call against long shot Gun Song, but she found what she needed to, and now she stretches back out to a better trip. However, she’ll be a short price, even shorter now that Idiomatic will no longer pursue consecutive editions of the race, and she’ll have to find her best while facing older for the first time.
