2024 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf
Updated November 1, 2024
Purse: $1,000,000
Distance: 1 mile
Grade: 1
Age: 2-year-old fillies
Post Time: Friday, November 1 at 4:05 p.m. PDT (Race 8 at Del Mar)
The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf was first staged at Santa Anita Park in 2008 as an ungraded race. It earned a Grade 2 rating in 2010, was promoted to the top level in 2014, and is perennially America’s best race for juvenile fillies on the grass. This year, it happens at a mile over the California firm turf at Del Mar Racetrack.
Trainer Chad Brown has been strong in this race, winning five of its 16 runnings so far. However, a wide range of trainers has made their mark in this race. Unlike the Juvenile Turf, which so often goes to international raiders, North American-based horses tend to do better in the Juvenile Fillies Turf: only two overseas horses have ever won.
Selecting Your Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf Bets
Finding contenders with a reasonable amount of stamina in their breeding could be the way to go. As always, read the form very carefully, as when one filly wins by five lengths, and another is beaten into second, that doesn’t automatically make the former better than the latter in the context of this race. Perhaps the ground was to their liking and won't be, or perhaps the race shape meant that a horse either got loose on an easy lead or had to face an unusually contested front end.
Check the fillies that all the top contenders have been racing against to see what they’ve each achieved, and you can build up a pattern showing who you think has a great shot at the prize.
Here at Fanduel Racing, we can keep you on track with regular information on all races as we approach post time at Keeneland in all of this year’s Breeders’ Cup races.

2024 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf Contenders
The main contenders for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf include:
Fiery Lucy - Trainer: Gavin Cromwell - Sire: Without Parole
If Heavens Gate looks live—and, she does!—then Fiery Lucy has to figure, too. Though her only win in six starts has come in non-stakes company, she has hit the board in a pair of Group 3 races as her last two preps for the Breeders’ Cup. Last out, she missed by just a neck to Heavens Gate in the Weld Park Stakes (G3), and two back, she missed by 1 ½ lengths in a Group 3 mile at the Curragh. Both of those happened over good ground, suggesting that another shot at a mile over firmer going may suit her, at a solid price given her overseas class.
Heavens Gate - Trainer: Aidan O’Brien - Sire: Churchill
With seven starts already, she brings a lot of experience to this spot for a top turf trainer. She has shown good form over good ground in Europe, with a win in the Weld Park last out at the Curragh and a couple of Group 3 placings over good ground as well. She has yet to stretch out to a mile, but she handled seven furlongs well last out, and she is bred top and bottom to enjoy this extra distance.
Lake Victoria - Trainer: Aidan O’Brien - Sire: Frankel
This Aidan O’Brien charge is undefeated in four starts. She won last out at six furlongs over soft going in the Cheveley Park (G1), but before that, she won both the Sweet Solera (G3) and the Moyglare Stud (G1) going seven furlongs on good ground. She’ll have to prove that her overseas speed can get her forward on this side of the Atlantic, but on the step up in trip that is a possibility, and being a daughter of Frankel, she should have no trouble stepping up to this one-mile distance.
Scythian - Trainer: Bill Mott - Sire: Tiz the Law
She started against New York-breds, graduating second-out in her first try on the grass. She stepped up against open company in the Miss Grillo (G2) next out, tracking in range and kicking away to win by 2 ½ lengths. She needs to improve from a speed perspective, but her maiden win suggests there’s something she can find, and her running style is just the kind that should allow her to work out a good trip.
Thought Process - Trainer: Phil D’Amato - Sire: Collected
She was a well-beaten third on debut on dirt, but three starts since going a mile on the grass have shown her at her best. She has shown she can set the pace, stalk the pace, or even chase midfield. She is a two-time winner over the same course and distance at the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, and though the competition gets significantly tougher, she has shown enough that she might just be better than the usual California turf horse.
Vixen - Trainer: Mark Casse - Sire: Vekoma
She missed by a neck last out in the Natalma (G1) at Woodbine, but still ran a good effort, tracking within range and continuing on with good interest late. It was her second try at a mile on grass—that one was a one-turn mile over the sweeping Woodbine course, but she also won over a traditional two-turn turf mile at Ellis when she broke her maiden. She has upside returning to that configuration, and if she can take another modest step forward she has price potential
