2024 Breeders’ Cup Sprint Contenders
With the full field drawn, these are the leading contenders in the 2024 Breeders’ Cup Sprint:
Gun Pilot - Trainer: Steve Asmussen - Sire: Gun Runner
The Breeders’ Cup Sprint is full of horses who need the lead, making it just the kind of chaotic situation in which a long shot from off the pace can spring a surprise. Gun Pilot would be even better suited if this race were seven furlongs like the Filly and Mare Sprint, but even at six he has been able to get the job done, and his best race is good enough to find the exotics if all the better-fancied speed horses burn each other out.
Federal Judge - Trainer: Brad Cox - Sire: Army Mule
This rising sprint star will be part of the speed brigade, so it won’t be easy. However, he often makes the top in sprint races, including when he cut back to six furlongs for the Phoenix (G2) last out at Keeneland. He will have to deal with a post position toward the inside, which may make things tough as he is drawn inside other speed. But, he has dealt with relatively inside draws before, so he may be able to handle it again.
Mullikin - Trainer: Rodolphe Brisset - Sire: Violence
He rides a four-win streak into the Breeders’ Cup, including an emphatic Grade 1 win in the Forego (G1) last out at Saratoga. He has a pressing gear, meaning he should keep on running if he is outjumped to the lead. The big question for him is distance, as his ascent to the graded-stakes ranks has come going seven furlongs, not six. But, he started his season with a six-furlong win that came back fast enough to be optimistic about his chances to find his best.
Nakatomi - Trainer: Wesley Ward - Sire: Firing Line
This consistent millionaire has won six times and hit the board in all but four of his outings. Though he is only 1-for-4 this year, he has finished in the money in all four starts this year—and all of them have come at the six-furlong distance of the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. The pace setup in this race should set up nicely for him: he does his best work tracking the pace, meaning he could get a run on a contested pace at just the right time.
Raging Torrent - Trainer: Doug O’Neill - Sire: Maximus Mischief
He has won two of four starts at Del Mar, including the Pat O’Brien (G2) last out—over no less than The Chosen Vron, who is on the vet’s list and has to bypass the Breeders’ Cup, but would be a favorite had he been entered. The six-furlong distance is the question, as he hasn’t tried it since his juvenile season, and his current three-win streak has unfolded at seven-furlong trips. But, he has shown a tactical gear and he is is a horse-for-course in the best form of his life so far.
Remake - Trainer: Koichi Shintani - Sire: Lani
Remake is the top international contender in this race. A dirt sprinter based in Japan, this is his first visit to the United States but he is no stranger to some globetrotting. He won the Korea Sprint (G2) over Jasper Krone last out, and to start the year he notched a victory over fellow Breeders’ Cup Sprint entrant Skelly in the Riyadh Dirt Sprint (G3) on the Saudi Cup (G1) undercard. With regular jockey Yugi Kawada shipping again, he should be coming late.
