Post Time: Saturday, November 2 at 4:45 p.m. PDT (Race 11 at Del Mar)
One of the original races at the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, the Mile, has always been run on the grass. This year, the world’s top grass milers compete on Saturday, November 2, at Del Mar Racetrack.
Over the years, the European horses have excelled in this race. Indeed, Englishman and former California trainer John Gosden won the first-ever running back in 1984, and this year at Del Mar, there is once again expected to be a strong overseas contingent among the 14 starters in the gate. However, some North American races like the Woodbine Mile, Keeneland Turf Mile, Fourstardave, and City of Hope Mile can produce some interesting contenders.
Racing greats such as Da Hoss, Goldikova, Lure, and Tepin have been among the winners of this great race in the past, and this year’s renewal promises to be just as high-quality. The Mile tends to have a furious finish, often with the top runners close together, and is one of the most difficult races to handicap.
In 2020 at Keeneland, 73-1 shot Order of Australia won the race! However, trainer Charlie Appleby has won this the last three years, including the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Mile at Santa Anita with Master of the Seas. Will this year shape up for a long shot or the favorite? Keep reading to find out.
Selecting Your FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Mile Bets
Given the prevalence of the European mile turf form, before making a final selection, bettors should be aware of the results of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge series races, world rankings, and which horses perform the best on the ground that comes up on Breeders’ Cup day, while also checking the times of the best US-based horses. Typically, in America, the turf comes up on the firm side, though, especially with the race being in Kentucky sometimes a rainstorm can blow through and make the ground more suitable for Europeans who prefer more give.
Above all else, keep checking back with us here at FanDuel Racing. Our team of racing specialists are always on hand to offer expertise and insight as we get closer to post time in the Mile on November 2. FanDuel has information on contenders and much more besides to help you pick out your Breeders’ Cup Mile bet.

Breeders’ Cup Mile 2024 Contenders
These are the leading contenders in the 2024 Breeders’ Cup Mile.
Carl Spackler - Trainer: Chad Brown - Sire: Lope de Vega
A buzz horse for his entire career, he has come into the expectations in his last two starts, romping in the Fourstardave (G1) and then wiring the Turf Mile (G1) at Keeneland as his final prep for the Breeders’ Cup. He is six-for-seven lifetime at the mile, and his tactical versatility means he can run a winning race from anywhere. He still has to prove himself against international lights, but he is the top American turf miler at the moment.
Diego Velazquez - Trainer: Aidan O’Brien - Sire: Frankel
Aidan O’Brien, one of the world’s top turf trainers, swept the trifecta in this race in 2020. He empties the barn here, with three entrants plus one on the reserve list. The best of the bunch is Diego Velazquez, who comes into the race off of wins in the Meld (G3) and the Solonaway (G2), the last one at a mile. He has been a type who has come close but not quite gotten it done at the top level, but this sophomore is in his best form yet and has every right to thrive at a mile over firm ground.
Johannes - Trainer: Tim Yakteen - Sire: Nyquist
Usually the west-coast turf division is a revolving door. But, there has been a refreshing consistency in top turf miles at both Santa Anita and Del Mar this year. That is because of Johannes, who has rattled off four straight graded-stakes wins this year. He has tactical speed and is unbeaten at the mile distance, both points in his favor. However, demand a price, as these international foes are a major step up from the California set.
More Than Looks - Trainer: Cherie DeVaux - Sire: More Than Ready
He was beaten only two lengths in this race last year as a sophomore who had never tried top-level company before. He picked up where he left off last year, finishing runner up behind Carl Spackler in both the Fourstardave and the Turf Mile at Keeneland. He often either gets going a little too late or finds someone too good, but he does reliably uncork that late run and should be flying on late for a piece once again.
Notable Speech - Trainer: Charlie Appleby - Sire: Dubawi
Charlie Appleby has a hammerlock on this race: he has won the last three with Space Blues, Modern Games, and Master of the Seas. This time he brings perhaps his classiest contender yet: Notable Speech. He is 5-for-7 lifetime, including victories in the 2000 Guineas (G1), a one-mile classic against his own age group, as well as the Sussex (G1) at Glorious Goodwood, a one-mile race against older. He’ll get the firm ground he craves in California, another point in his favor.
Porta Fortuna - Trainer: Donnacha O’Brien - Sire: Caravaggio
This sophomore is American-owned, but Irish-trained and has spent most of her career in Europe. Her previous trip to the U.S. resulted in a close second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies last year. She has emerged as a top miler: she just missed in the 1000 Guineas (G1) at Newmarket but then rattled off wins in the Coronation (G1) at Royal Ascot against her own age group, and then both the Falmouth (G1) and Matron (G1) versus older. She placed at the top level against males last year and may actually go off overlaid with Notable Speech in the field.
