2024 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile

Updated October 29, 2024

  • Purse: $1,000,000

  • Distance: 1 mile

  • Grade: 1

  • Age: 3-year-old+

  • Post Time: Saturday, November 2 at 5:25 p.m. PDT (Race 12 at Del Mar)

One mile is an excellent test for a horse, as it requires the sort of balance of speed and stamina that many breeders are looking for in a sire. Its recent winners have been some of its best yet: 2018 winner City of Light went on to win the Pegasus World Cup, 2020 winner Knicks Go went on to win the Pegasus and the Breeders’ Cup Classic the next year, and 2021 winner Life Is Good was one of the best handicap horses of 2022, too.

Cody’s Wish, the popular winner of the 2022 edition of this race, came back for the 2023 renewal at Keeneland after a campaign that reiterated that even though he may not be a Breeders’ Cup Classic contender, he is a top-notch miler. He achieved the first repeat since Goldencents in 2013 and 2014, and went on to Horse of the Year honors.

The 2024 edition at Del Mar Racetrack will undoubtedly feature an intriguing mix of horses who are stepping up from sprints as well as those cutting back from longer distance, so it should be a fascinating battle of racing styles, as they tackle the two-turn mile.

Selecting Your Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile Bets

Year in and year out, the Dirt Mile is a special handicapping puzzle full of stretch-out sprinters, turn-back routers, and true milers. Bettors must decide whether those used to battling it out over 1¼ miles will stay on past tiring horses in the stretch or whether around the Del Mar bends those coming hard out of the gate and who are all speed will burn the opposition off.

2024 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile Contenders

These are the leading contenders for the 2024 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile

Domestic Product - Trainer: Chad Brown - Sire: Practical Joke

He was pre-entered in the Sprint as well, but as intriguing as that spot was, this was the plan all along and Chad Brown stuck to the plan. He does have some good two-turn form, though he has blossomed going one turn in his last two starts. Obviously, he can stay the mile, but it’s a two-turn configuration. If you’re willing to bet that he’s just gotten better, and that will translate to two turns, consider him, but the price will be short.

Full Serrano - Trainer: John Sadler - Sire: Full Mast

He spent most of his career in Argentina, but came to the United States for his last two starts and has been in sharp form in those outings. He won an allowance at a mile two starts back, and then missed by only ½ length after setting the pace in the 1 ¼-mile Pacific Classic. He is well proven over the Del Mar surface, he has grit on the lead, and he should be fit turning back to a mile, a trip at which he has never been worse than second.

Muth - Trainer: Bob Baffert - Sire: Good Magic

The question is, which Muth is going to show up? If he comes up empty like he did in the California Crown at Santa Anita, that Muth won’t stand a chance. But, if he can bounce back to his best in his second try against older? That Muth can win. With tactical speed and a very good effort at a mile over the Del Mar course in the Shared Belief two starts back, he has something competitive to run back to.

Post Time - Trainer: Brittany Russell - Sire: Frosted

This would be an even better race for him if it were hosted at a track that could have a one-turn mile. Even so, he wasn’t a bad third in the two-turn, 1 ⅛-mile Whitney (G1) two starts back. With a lot of speed entered in the race, if horses running on from off the pace are getting a fair enough shake during Breeders’ Cup week at Del Mar, this consistent runner could be the price for exotics.

Seize the Grey - Trainer: D. Wayne Lukas - Sire: Arrogate

There isn’t a perfect Breeders’ Cup race for him; something like a 1 ⅛-mile dirt race would hit him perfectly, like the Pennsylvania Derby (G1) he won last out. However, his win in the Pat Day Mile suggests he can shorten up. He is versatile enough to win on the front end or rally from a handful of lengths off—expect the latter here—though he does have to tackle older for the first time.
