  • Grade: 1

  • Age: 2-year-olds

This classic race, the championship event for two-year-old colts and geldings, has been on the Breeders’ Cup schedule from the beginning back in 1984. It is one of the most important events of the entire Thoroughbred horse racing season.

Winners of the Breeders Cup Juvenile are often made the early favorite for the Kentucky Derby, especially given that they finish the year as the champion juvenile and most likely earn the Eclipse Award. This is something that was backed up by the brilliant Nyquist when he did the Juvenile-Derby double in 2015/16, so whoever wins this event will be seen as a real superstar. Street Sense was the first to accomplish the double in 2006/2007.

Selecting Your FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Bets

Whatever they do or do not go on to achieve as three-year-olds, winners of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile are often revered. They often come into the race as battle-hardened, graded winners despite their tender years and low mileage, so when you’re checking out the form, be sure to think about that.

FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Contenders

These are the leading contenders for the 2023 FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Juvenile:

Chancer McPatrick - Trainer: Chad Brown - Sire: McKinzie

He is undefeated in three starts, including two in Grade 1 company. That includes an improbable victory in the Hopeful where Flavien Prat lost the irons early, he had only a modest pace to run down, and he still got up over Ferocious. Watch the track bias to make sure closers are getting a fair shake, but if they are? There are many runners in the field who do their best work up front, and he could get the setup.

Citizen Bull - Trainer: Bob Baffert - Sire: Into Mischief

Trained by perennial juvenile powerhouse Bob Baffert, Citizen Bull is California speed. He took the American Pharoah from gate to wire, and though he has tables to turn on Gaming and McKinzie Street from a local Grade 1 try in the Del Mar Futurity, that was only at one turn, and he woke up so well at two turns. The biggest question is the presence of other speed, but he pressed the pace on debut and may be able to show that gear again.

East Avenue - Trainer: Brendan Walsh - Sire: Medaglia d’Oro

In two starts, he has yet to be threatened. He wired a six-furlong maiden and won by eight lengths, then wired the Breeders’ Futurity (G1), crossing the wire 5 ¼ lengths clear of Ferocious. This will be a tougher test, as there is a lot more speed in this race than there was entered in the Breeders’ Futurity. But, especially if the Bafferts and Ferocious take all the money, East Avenue may still be enough of a price to bet either that he’ll make the top or that he could possibly be tactical.

Ferocious - Trainer: Todd Pletcher - Sire: Flatter

It’s hard to trust him on top, especially after being defeated in both the Hopeful and the Breeders’ Futurity. But, Chancer McPatrick and East Avenue look like quality strength of schedule. Ferocious has proven he can pass horses, a big plus given how much speed there is in this race. And, if he can get his head straight in the early stages, he could put it together on the biggest juvenile stage of all.

Gaming - Trainer: Bob Baffert - Sire: Game Winner

This son of Bob Baffert’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Game Winner is undefeated in two starts. He has yet to try two turns, and that’s a question. The Game Winner on top is a positive, but underneath looks a little more sprint-oriented, meaning there is a question as to how well he is going to handle the stretch out. That said, he has won from both the front end and midfield, and both his wins have come on the local dirt.

Jonathan’s Way - Trainer: Philip Bauer - Sire: Vekoma

He needs a step up from his first two starts, though the freshening since the Iroquois (G3) has given him some time to grow up a bit. He has shown good pace versatility, wiring the Iroquois but winning a six-furlong maiden race from off the pace after getting pinched off early. That ability to handle adversity could help him, given the possibility for chaos in this large a field.
