2024 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf
Updated October 31, 2024
Purse: $1,000,000
Distance: 1 mile
Grade: 1
Age: 2-year-olds
Post Time: Friday, November 1 at 5:25 p.m. PDT (Race 10 at Del Mar)
The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf was first staged at Monmouth in 2007 as an ungraded race. By 2010, it was a Grade 2, and since 2012, it has held a top grade. This year, it returns to Del Mar, keeps its million-dollar purse, and will once again be a showcase of the top young turf routers.
International runners tend to do well in this race, as 11 of the 17 winners so far have been trained outside of the United States. Charlie Appleby, Aiden O’Brien, and John Gosden have been excellent in this race. However, domestic trainers like Mike Maker, Chad Brown, Brian Lynch, and Wesley Ward have also seen recent success.
Selecting Your Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Bets
Having access to the form of the runners is even more important than usual, as it can be difficult to follow the careers of the runners based in Europe unless you are a hardcore racing guru. Check the runners to see what they’ve each achieved, take a few minutes to watch replays on TVG.com, and you can build up a pattern showing who you think has a great shot at the prize.
Here at FanDuel Racing we can keep you on track with regular information on all races as we approach post-time at Keeneland in all of this year’s Breeders Cup.

Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Contenders
The top contenders for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf include:
Al Qudra - Trainer: Charlie Appleby - Sire: No Nay Never
Though this pace-versatile son of No Nay Never has yet to win a graded-stakes or group-level race, he is a two-time winner in Great Britain and missed by only a length in the Coventry (G2) at Royal Ascot. He has gotten his sea legs in North America, too; he was second in the Summer (G1) at Woodbine, as New Century got the jump on him that day. Charlie Appleby has won this race three times already, so he knows how to get a juvenile ready to show up in this spot.
Aomori City - Trainer: Charlie Appleby - Sire: Oasis Dream
The second of a strong one-two punch from the Appleby yard, Aomori City makes his first North American start in the Breeders’ Cup. Though he was beaten in a Group 1 race in Ireland last out, he won the Vintage (G2) at Goodwood before that. Unlike his stablemate, he has yet to try the mile, but his pedigree appeals for a mile (and beyond) top and bottom, and without the North American race less sophisticated bettors might shy away and make him tote-board value despite his trainer’s excellent record.
Henri Matisse - Trainer: Aidan O’Brien - Sire: Wootton Bassett
Aidan O’Brien sends a pair to this race, and he is the more class-proven one. Perhaps he didn’t love the soft ground last out in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere (G1) last out at Longchamp. No matter, he was much better on good ground at the Curragh, winning the Futurity (G2) and finishing second beaten ¾ length in the Vincent O’Brien National (G1). Though he has yet to try a mile, his breeding supports that trip and beyond, and this looks like a good place for him to break through.
New Century - Trainer: Andrew Balding - Sire: Kameko
A winner of two of four starts in Great Britain, he shipped to North America, turned the tables on Al Qudra, and won the Summer, his first graded-stakes try. He has won both of his starts at a mile and never been worse than second on the grass. And, though he closed after a poor start in the Summer, he has been more tactically placed in other starts, giving him a good chance to show a good effort on California-firm ground.
Satono Carnaval - Trainer: Noriyuki Hori - Sire: Kitasan Black
He is a wild card here, as he hasn’t raced since July. However, he has yet to set a hoof wrong on race day: he romped in a seven-furlong newcomers (all first-time starters) race at Tokyo to begin his career, and then shortened up to six furlongs to win the Hakodate Nisai (G3) the next month. Keep an eye on how he looks during morning training in the days leading up to Breeders’ Cup. But, if he looks strong and engaged, he certainly has the pedigree to thrive at a mile (or even longer, in the future).
Zulu Kingdom - Trainer: Chad Brown - Sire: Ten Sovereigns
Trained by Chad Brown, he has yet to set a hoof wrong in four starts. A debut winner going seven furlongs in France, he then came stateside and has won a pair of 1 1/16-mile races in New York. The victory over firm ground in the With Anticipation (G3) is particularly notable, since it shows he does not need soft ground to do his best work, and even though he has only won by slim margins in his two two-turn starts, he hasn’t sat too far off and should be close enough to contend.
