2024 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint
Updated November 1, 2024
Purse: $1,000,000
Distance: 5 ½ furlongs
Grade: 1
Age: 2-year-olds
Post Time: Friday, November 1 at 2:45 p.m. PDT (Race 6 at Del Mar)
Despite only being on the calendar since 2018, this is one of the newer championship races, but its importance is not lost on trainers, jockeys, and owners.
Just as all new stakes races, the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint began its life ungraded, but it has risen meteorically in importance as a stronger juvenile turf sprint division has been built in the United States. It is now a Grade 1 race worth a million dollars, and it attracts top turf sprinters from all over the world. Its 2020 winner, Golden Pal, continued to shine in the turf sprint division at ages three and four, cementing the importance of this race.
Selecting Your Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint Bets
Given how new this race is, making an informed decision when placing a bet on the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint can be difficult. The race is being run over a flat five furlongs, so looking at horses who can shorten up that far is a good first start. After all, five-furlong speed is different from six-furlong speed or even five-and-a-half-furlong speed.
Whatever your preferred tactic—from reading the form lines of these juveniles (their race times and workout times) to, of course, checking out interviews with trainers who will point you in the right direction whenever they can—remember that you can always rely on FanDuel Racing to keep you on track.
We have information on Breeders’ Cup contenders and much more besides to help you pick out your Juvenile Turf Sprint bet.

2024 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint Contenders
Heading into the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, these are the horses to watch. They include favorites, as well as some price horses who should be able to make an impact.
Aesterius - Trainer: Archie Watson - Sire: Mehmas
A winner of four of his six starts, he has won two straight group-level stakes at five furlongs. He won the Prix d’Arenberg (G3) over soft ground in France, then held by a neck to deny Big Mojo in the Flying Childers (G2) at Doncaster last out. The question is whether his European speed will hold up early against American speed, but with the ability to win if forward but not right on the early lead, he could work a trip anyway.
Big Mojo - Trainer: Michael Appleby - Sire: Mohaather
Michael Appleby won this race last year at Santa Anita with Big Evs and comes back with another “Big” chance this year. Though he has won just once in four starts, he is a Group 3 winner at this distance, holding off Aesterius in the Molecomb (G3) in July. Aesterius turned the tables in the Flying Childers, but he missed by just a neck. And, if the early pace gets even faster this time around, his late run could be best.
Ides of March - Trainer: Aidan O’Brien - Sire: Wootton Bassett
Aidan O’Brien has far more of a record with milers and routers than with sprinters, but he has a nice-looking sprinter in Ides of March. He took three starts to break his maiden, but followed a three-length maiden win at the Curragh with a 3 ¼-length romp in the Round Tower (G3) on August 31. He hasn’t raced since, so watch him in the mornings. He also has to answer the question as to whether he can shorten up from six furlongs to five, but if he can, he is an interesting new face against the Flying Childers set.
Governor Sam - Trainer: George Weaver - Sire: Improbable
Especially if speed is holding well on the turf during Breeders’ Cup week, give a long look to this one. He has won four straight over distances of five and 5 ½ furlongs. He has been on or near the lead each time, but shown the ability to stalk or duel, and the gameness to keep finishing the job each time. He has a class question to answer here, with all of the overseas runners, but he has grit and the strongest form of the American set.
Shareholder - Trainer: Karl Burke - Sire: Not This Time
Toss the last; he faltered when stretching out to six furlongs and trying soft ground. He caught better ground in his first two starts, both over five furlongs, and rallied to score both times. He’ll need a lively pace in front of him this time, but there is enough speed for that to happen. If he looks good in morning gallops the week leading into the race, he has a lot of upside cutting back in trip and getting better ground.
