2024 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Contenders
These are the leading contenders heading into the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies:
American Bikini - Trainer: Takashi Saito - Sire: American Pharoah
She needed her debut to get going, but she has been downright impressive in her last two starts. She broke her maiden by seven lengths over fellow Breeders’ Cup entrant Otomena Shacho, and then came back to win the seven-furlong Yamaboshi Show in confident fashion. She has yet to stretch out longer than that, but the pedigree is all distance: she is an American Pharoah half to Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) winner Paris Lights.
Immersive - Trainer: Brad Cox - Sire: Nyquist
Undefeated in three starts, she upset the Spinaway (G1) on closing day at Saratoga and then proved that was no fluke by winning the Alcibiades (G1) when trying two turns for the first time. That race didn’t come back the fastest, but everything about her pedigree suggests she should keep thriving at two turns, and she has won every single one of her starts in tactical fashion.
La Cara - Trainer: Mark Casse - Sire: Street Sense
It took her a while to put things together, but more distance did the job. Two back, in her fourth start, she romped by eight lengths in a seven-furlong race, and she followed that up with a victory in the one-mile Pocahontas (G3) at Churchill Downs. She should be better, even, at two turns: she is by Street Sense out of a full sister to both To Honor and Serve and Angela Renee.
Nooni - Trainer: Bob Baffert - Sire: Win Win Win
She was the less-regarded of the Baffert pair on draw day, but the only one expected to go after the Tuesday scratch of Non Compliant, the horse who beat her in the Oak Leaf (G2) last out. She needs to step forward after a couple of disappointments in her last two, but without much in the way of hardcore early speed in this race, Nooni is fast enough early to break well, clear off, and try to lead them around at a big price.
Scottish Lassie - Trainer: Jorge Abreu - Sire: McKinzie
She entered the Frizette (G1) a maiden, but came out of it not only a winner, but an impressive nine-length winner. The Frizette has been one of the most live Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies preps in recent years, and that trend bodes well for Scottish Lassie. The question is distance, as she has yet to stretch past a mile, but her pedigree should support it, and she has the tactical speed to work a trip.
