Del Mar will host the 18th edition of the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint on November 2, as part of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships. The race should be an excellent handicapping challenge, especially with two-time winner Goodnight Olive now retired. The filly and mare dirt sprint division has been competitive all year long, and this race offers a chance for a great payoff.

This lightly-raced three-year-old made the grade last out in the Chillingworth (G3), her stakes debut. She has won both her starts at Del Mar, including a seven-length allowance romp over older horses two back. She should have no trouble with the extra half furlong, and she has the tactical versatility to work out a trip.
Pleasant - Trainer: Bob Baffert - Sire: Munnings
This daughter of top seven-furlong sire Munnings has a lot of class to prove, as she will be making her stakes debut in the Breeders’ Cup. However, she returned from a layoff of over a year to thrash second-level allowance company at Los Alamitos going 6 ½ furlongs. She won going that same trip at Del Mar last year. And, over a track that tends to play kindly to speed, she could easily shape as the speed of the speed, and lead a game of catch-me-if-you-can.
Society - Trainer: Steve Asmussen - Sire: Gun Runner
She has been nibbling at the top of the filly and mare sprint division for a while now, but looks like she put it all together last out when stalking, pouncing, and winning the Ballerina (G1) last out by 3 ¼ lengths. That may shape up to be the winning trip, and she is a consistent seven-furlong mare who can take her best game to racetracks around the country.
Vahva - Trainer: Cherie DeVaux - Sire: Gun Runner
She was rising in the ranks late last year with wins in the Charles Town Oaks (G3) and Raven Run (G2), and has been a premier seven-furlong filly this year. She has been in the money in all four starts, including a victory in the Derby City Distaff (G1). She’ll have to do better than last out, because she was no match for Society in the Ballerina (G1), but with strong seven-furlong form and good tactical speed, she has the right tools.
Ways and Means - Trainer: Chad Brown - Sire: Practical Joke
Chad Brown won the last two editions of this race with Goodnight Olive, and he comes back with a contender in Ways and Means. Two turns proved too much for her earlier this year, but she has won three straight at one turn (or in one case, one turn plus a chute, as the Saratoga mile is). She has thrashed older company both times she has faced it, and though this is a class rise, this consistent and hard-fighting horse can win this if she fires her best.
