About Yonkers
Home of the Empire City Trotting Club since 1899, Yonkers Raceway remains one of the most important and most popular harness racing tracks in the country.Boasting the Empire City Casino and simulcast facilities, Yonkers is one of the busier tracks in the country and hosts the New York Night of Champions each year. Yonkers is ideally situated in New York to gain a massive following.
Yonkers History
The track opened in 1899 as the Empire City Trotting Club with over 12,000 people attending the opening day that September.Having closed between 1900 and 1906, the facility was re-opened in 1907 as a thoroughbred racing venue and continued doing good business as such until 1942, with horses of the quality of Seabiscuit racing at the track during this time.
Yonkers’ grandstand was furnished with pari-mutuel machines as soon as they were legalized in 1940 and by 1943 harness racing had returned to one of its spiritual homes.
Major changes took place between 1950 and 1962 when Yonkers became the first harness track to handle $3million on a single night, such as a refurbishment and the introduction of the Trotting Triple Crown.
Dramatic changes were put into effect from 1996 when first the owners lengthened the stretch from 440 feet to 660 feet before giving the facilities a major overhaul to bring it up to modern standards.
