Pleasanton Track History
Augustin Bernal constructed Pleasanton Race Track in 1858, making it the oldest surviving horse racing track in the country today. Originally serving as a training track for the horses of local Spaniards, Pleasanton received its first grandstand in 1876 after Joseph Nevis purchased the venue. The track hosted the Golden Gate Fair in 1902 and the Pleasanton Fair and Races in 1904. The first modern Alameda County Fair took place here in 1912.
California legalized parimutuel horse race betting in 1933, and mutuel wagering began at Pleasanton six years later. Two years after that, the track set a national record for average daily handle during its nine-day meet.
Pleasanton closed for three years during World War II, but the post-war era saw numerous developments at the track. The modern grandstand replaced the old wooden one in 1963, a nine-hole golf course supplanted the venue's inner racecourse in 1975, and a simulcast horse race betting facility opened in 1991. In recent years, Pleasanton's owners renovated the Palm Pavilion, which serves up highly-regarded cuisine to patrons and commanding views over the track and its thrilling clubhouse turn.
