About Horseshoe Indianapolis

Horseshoe Indianapolis, in Shelbyville, is a racino which acts as the closest casino to Indianapolis, the city being only a half hour away and which also sits right next door to Shelbyville Municipal Airport.

The facility boasts the Grand Buffet, various other restaurants, gift shops and entertainment venues alongside the race track and casino as part of its 233,000 square foot plot. There are 2,300 slot machines and a poker room and was rebuilt at a cost of in excess of $250million. The racino, as we know it now, opened up on March 13, 2009.

Horseshoe Indianapolis History

In August 2000, a proposal to build a standardbred horse racing venue in Lawrence, Indiana was rejected by the state’s Horse Racing Commission. The decision was borne out of the belief that the track would be too close to Hoosier Park which was Indiana’s only pari-mutuel facility at that time.

The following year however the Commission voted unanimously to allow a track to be built in Shelbyville and so construction began very soon after the vote.

Indiana Downs, as it was then, opened its doors in late 2002 with Crosswind making history as the first ever winner at the track.

Horseshoe Indianapolis Track Details

There is a one-mile dirt oval track with two chutes at Horseshoe Indianapolis, the 80 foot wide track able to accommodate 9 starters behind the gate who face a 900-foot run to the wire from the home turn, as well as a 7/8 mile turf course.
