    The Humboldt County Fair runs mid-to-late August each year with 10 days of live racing around Ferndale as part of the celebrations. Results at Ferndale during this time will appear right here.

    About Ferndale

    Horse racing has been at the centre of the Humboldt County Fair since 1935 and takes place over the 10 days of the festival on the half-mile oval.

    Given the unusually small nature of the track, racing at Ferndale has been described as being like watching horses negotiate a bullring where the equine stars very often struggle to navigate their way around the tight, unbanked turns.

    Owing to the Victorian village feel of the whole area as well as the no-thrills nature of the facilities at Ferndale, many believe that racing is run true to the history of the track and has not changed an awful lot since the first race meet back in 1896.

    Ferndale is picturesque and near the beach, however it can still draw custom from Sacramento which is 280 miles away and San Francisco (260 miles).

    Ferndale Track Details

    Part of the county fairgrounds, Ferndale has a half-mile dirt track accommodating thoroughbred races with a small grandstand overlooking it and room for stabling and horsemen, sometimes in portable facilites. The grandstand can seat 1,800 people.

    There is a run of just 530 feet from the final turn to the wire by which time not all horses have been able to straighten up near the rail, adding to the usually thrilling finishes.
