About Hollywood Raceway

To give it its full moniker, the Hollywood Casino Hotel & Raceway is an all-encompassing facility in Bangor, Maine. Although famous for racing, this venue was the first licensed slots facility in the whole state and later the first full casino permitted in Maine too.

The track sits right on the banks of the Penobscot River, right near downtown Bangor and fully 230 miles to the nearest major city which is Boston, Massachusetts over 3½ hours away by road.

The area is very true to sporting traditions as the State Fair is hosted on the same grounds and there is a fine golf course right next door to the track.

Hollywood Raceway History

The property opened up to the public as recently as November 2005 as a harness racing venue and did well in its early years, though was immediately in need of supplemental income.

The need for more revenue saw this site officially became a racino when new owners Penn National Gaming won the right to house slot machines and off-track betting. The casino part of the operation was moved across the street to a brand new facility in 2007, meaning they had room for 1,000 slots.

In 2012 the owners were granted permission to add traditional casino table games to the site’s offering and this has greatly increased revenue and thus purse sizes too.

Hollywood Raceway Track Details

The track is a standard half-mile dirt oval with no chutes. Small, but good facilities are in place off the backstretch for horses and horsemen alike.
