Pegasus World Cup 2024 Odds
By TVG Staff
Updated January 26, 2024
The $3 million Pegasus World Cup (G1) happens on Saturday, January 27, at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida. It is the first top-level race of the year for handicap-division horses, and it is one of the most exciting betting opportunities of the winter season.
The field for the Pegasus World Cup is big: 12 invitees in the main field plus one also-eligible entrant. The race covers 1 ⅛ miles: a middle distance that, along with the big purse, entices the connections of not only nine-furlong horses but also stretch-out sprinters and classic-distance horses to try their hands. This makes the Pegasus World Cup an excellent handicapping puzzle, and a race that can pay big. So, make sure you know what the Pegasus World Cup odds mean, because an informed bettor is a good bettor!
Pegasus World Cup Odds Trends
Since the Pegasus World Cup Invitational began in 2017, most of the winners have been well-fancied in the wagering. Arrogate (2017), Gun Runner (2018), Knicks Go (2021), and Life Is Good (2022) were all favored in the win pools; 2019 winner City of Light and 2020 winner Mucho Gusto were each second favorites. On the win end, the Pegasus World Cup tends to be very formful.
The trend of favorites winning the Pegasus, however, is no sure thing. In 2023, most players thought it was Cyberknife’s race to lose. However, to the delight of clever bettors, a different horse dominated the race and did so at 15-1 odds. Art Collector, a Bill Mott trainee with several years of top-class experience, ran one of his career-best races and paraded to victory.
Even when favorites do run to their action, price horses have frequently spiked Pegasus World Cup exotic wagers with value. In 2022, although the top two betting choices ran 1-2, 26-1 outsider Stilleto Boy ran on to capture the show. In 2021, although Knicks Go was a heavy favorite, 11-1 Jesus’ Team and 27-1 Independence Hall filled out the trifecta. Finding the right long shot to put into your exactas and trifectas pays off well, meaning the race can be an excellent betting opportunity.
The Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile has been a major prep throughout Pegasus history. Though two-time winner Cody’s Wish has been retired to stud, several of the horses who chased him home might appear in the Pegasus World Cup. Those include Preakness winner National Treasure, who finished a gallant second. Skippylongstocking, third in the race, has already proven himself to be a tough competitor at Gulfstream Park.
None of the leaders from the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Classic are returning in the Pegasus World Cup, which is no surprise since so many retired. This continues a recent trend of the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile being the most important Breeders’ Cup prep for the Pegasus World Cup.
Among horses who bypassed the Breeders’ Cup, expect First Mission is likely to be best fancied at the windows. He has been a buzz horse since he won the Lexington (G3) last year, and he came back from a long layoff to tally an allowance win and a good second in the Clark (G1). However, he is likely to have to face Trademark, the long shot who nosed him out in the Clark. Even so, First Mission has a better running style for Gulfstream Park than late-running Trademark.
How the Pegasus World Cup Odds Are Formulated
Morning line odds were released for the Pegasus World Cup, Pegasus World Cup Turf, and Pegasus Filly and Mare Turf on draw day, Sunday, January 21. However, it pays to keep watching the odds on race day, all the way until the horses proceed to the gate. After all, odds are decided in pari-mutuel fashion, with the final price depending on how much money bettors place on each horse compared to other horses.
There are always huge betting pools on Pegasus World Cup day. And, if you pick a winner or even an exotics candidate that most other bettors do not like, and they run well, you stand to cash a big ticket. However, if you agree with many other bettors and play a favorite, and that favorite wins, it will be a smaller but less risky payoff.

Pegasus World Cup Morning Line Odds

Preakness winner National Treasure was named a heavy 9-5 favorite in the overflow field, twelve horses plus one also-eligible entrant.
