Pegasus World Cup 2025 Odds

Updated January 19, 2025
The $3 million Pegasus World Cup (G1) happens on Saturday, January 27, at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida. It is the first top-level race of the year for handicap-division horses, and it is one of the most exciting betting opportunities of the winter season.
The 2025 Pegasus World Cup field features a full complement of 12 horses, as many as are allowed in the main field. The race covers 1 ⅛ miles on the Gulfstream Park dirt: a middle distance that, along with the big purse, entices the connections of not only nine-furlong horses but also stretch-out sprinters and classic-distance horses to try their hands. This makes the Pegasus World Cup an excellent handicapping puzzle, and a race that can pay big. So, make sure you know what the Pegasus World Cup odds mean, because an informed bettor is a good bettor!
Pegasus World Cup Odds Trends
Since the Pegasus World Cup Invitational began in 2017, most of the winners have been well-fancied in the wagering. Arrogate (2017), Gun Runner (2018), Knicks Go (2021), Life Is Good (2022), and National Treasure (2024) were all favored in the win pools; 2019 winner City of Light and 2020 Pegasus World Cup winner Mucho Gusto were each second favorites. On the win end, the Pegasus World Cup tends to be very formful.
The trend of favorites winning the Pegasus, however, is no sure thing. In 2023, most players thought it was Cyberknife’s race to lose. However, to the delight of clever bettors, a different horse dominated the race and did so at 15-1 odds. Art Collector, a Bill Mott trainee with several years of top-class experience, ran one of his career-best races and paraded to victory.
Even when favorites do run to their action, price horses have frequently spiked Pegasus World Cup exotic wagers with value. In 2022, although the top two betting choices ran 1-2, 26-1 outsider Stilleto Boy ran on to capture the show. In 2021, although Knicks Go was a heavy favorite, 11-1 Jesus’ Team and 27-1 Independence Hall filled out the trifecta. Finding the right long shot to put into your exactas and trifectas pays off well, meaning the race can be an excellent betting opportunity.
The Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile has been a major prep throughout Pegasus history. However, fewer horses than usual from the Dirt Mile are expected to contest the 2025 Pegasus World Cup. Skippylongstocking, the sixth-place finisher, is coming in for the Pegasus; he has a lot of strong form at Gulfstream, though he still has to prove himself going this far against horses of this level. 11th-place Saudi Crown is also coming; he had a good return effort at Fair Grounds, suggesting he is improving after the Breeders’ Cup disappointment.
No top runners from the 2024 Breeders’ Cup Classic are competing in the Pegasus World Cup in 2025, though 2023 winner White Abarrio is expected to line up. Though he was defeated in his final prep for the Pegasus, that was only a seven-furlong race where he had to rally from last. As a proven Gulfstream Park horse and a talented router, he can take another step forward now that he stretches out to a better distance for him. Mixto ran 11th in the 2024 Breeders’ Cup Classic, but will need a bounce back to his Pacific Classic (G1) surprise to figure.
The Cigar Mile hasn’t historically been the most live prep for the Pegasus World Cup, though its second-place finisher in 2023, Señor Buscador, went on to run an excellent second in the 2024 Pegasus. The 2024 Cigar Mile winner, Locked, is the morning-line favorite for the Pegasus despite a rough draw. Locked has been in strong form recently despite missing most of his three-year-old year. However, the price may be on the short side for him to prove himself at a two-turn distance at this level.
Another horse coming out of an unconventional prep who should get some betting interest is Saudi Crown, winner of the Tenacious at Fair Grounds last out. That is an ungraded race, but as a Grade 1 winner Saudi Crown has proper back class. He also has a lot of early speed, which can often be a winning tactic at Gulfstream Park.
How the Pegasus World Cup Odds Are Formulated
Morning line odds were released for the Pegasus World Cup, Pegasus World Cup Turf, and Pegasus Filly and Mare Turf on draw day, Sunday, January 21. However, it pays to keep watching the odds on race day, all the way until the horses proceed to the gate. After all, odds are decided in pari-mutuel fashion, with the final price depending on how much money bettors place on each horse compared to other horses.
There are always huge betting pools on Pegasus World Cup day. And, if you pick a winner or even an exotics candidate that most other bettors do not like, and they run well, you stand to cash a big ticket. However, if you agree with many other bettors and play a favorite, and that favorite wins, it will be a smaller but less risky payoff.
No matter what happens on the tote board between now and the moment the gates spring open for the Pegasus World Cup, TVG will always keep you close to the action! Sign up now, and take advantage of full-card broadcasts, expert analysis, and great promos all year long!
