About Laurel Park
Situated in Laurel, Maryland, the tracks at Laurel Park are used to host thoroughbred races including the Maryland Million. One individual Grade 1 and four Grade 2 races are hosted at this track.Laurel Park can draw on good sized crowds given that it’s equidistant between Baltimore, Maryland and Washington, DC.
Laurel Park History
Under the auspices of the Laurel Four County Fair, Laurel Park Racecourse opened up its doors in October 1911 and was later acquired by New York-based horsemen in 1914.In the 1930’s, the awesome equine talent that was Seabiscuit prepped at Laurel Park for his legendary match race with Admiral. Seabiscuit was even beaten around Laurel Park when finishing second in the Laurel Stakes in 1938.
Many years of success followed with Hall of Fame jockeys and top racing talent having plied their trade around this track to great acclaim.
The inaugural running of the Maryland Million, a program designed to show off the state’s breeding prowess, was held at Laurel Park in 1986 and ran strong for years.
There was a failed attempt to introduce slot machines to Laurel Park in 2013, however the race-minded Stronach Group announced that to counter this loss of potential revenue they would use the Maryland Racetrack Facility Redevelopment Account to fund racing and that is working for now with over 100 live dates in the calendar.
Laurel Park Track Details
The dirt track at Laurel is a nine-furlong oval, 75 feet in width and with a 1,344 foot run to the wire from the final turn. The turf course to its inside is one mile in distance and has a shorter 990 feet run-in.
